Planetary mills are classified as high-energy mills. It is usually used for superfine and fine grinding.

In classic planetary mills, drums with grinding balls rotate around their own axis and a common center (like planets, hence the name). Grinding in mills is distinguished into dry or wet.

Both dry and wet grindings can be carried out in periodic mills. Industrial planetary mills have their own designs for wet or dry grinding.

Laboratory planetary mills are usually batch-type, while industrial mills are continuous-type, although batch-type mills can also be used in industrial production.

In laboratory batch-type planetary mills, the axes of the grinding drums are usually positioned vertically, while in industrial continuous-type mills, they are positioned horizontally. The centrifugal forces on the balls are up to 40 g (g is the acceleration due to gravity). In laboratory mills, the initial powder has a particle size of <0.5 mm, while in industrial mills, it can be up to 5 mm.
